Regula Chronicles: Estonian Passport, 2021
The first issue of #RegulaChronicles this year is devoted to a new biometric passport of Estonia that is in circulation from January 1, 2021. The new passport design is inspired by Estonian national motifs of flora and fauna.
The passport cover is decorated with embossed silhouettes of trees. When exposed to UV light, the cover seems to sparkle with raindrops. The endpapers show the boulders with the country name and the calm sea which turns out to be covered by waves under UV light.
Undoubtedly, the plastic data page is full of security features. But the transparent window in the form of Estonian national border outlines and the CLI/MLI deserve special attention. Besides, you can see a luminescent image of an eagle-owl in UV and high-intensity IR light.
The inner passport pages are decorated with illustrations of fauna and flora. Among them are the national symbols of Estonia: the wolf, the swallow and the oak tree. Have a closer look and you will see poetic Estonian phrases (microprinting). The page with the wolf says "Listen, dear, how the trees rustle", with the boar – "Juicy cranberries on the swampy bank taste good"; with the bear – "The Estonian forest is beautiful".
The night landscape comes to life under UV light. The passport pages show a starry sky and a luminescent forest saying, "The night stars will show the way" and "The sky shines brightly in the starry night”.
Images of the document used in the video are taken from the Information Reference System (IRS) “Secure Documents Ultimate”. It contains detailed descriptions of security features in documents and banknotes as well as their images captured in white, IR and UV light.
The IRS “Secure Documents Ultimate” provides you with information about documents and banknotes from 212 countries and territories, including 2680 passports, 199 currencies, 174 visas and 909 vehicle-related documents.
