The operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) has experienced exponential growth, driven by their potential for commercial and recreational applications, and their efficient and cost-effective solutions for aerial works related to agriculture, logistics, infrastructure inspection, and cinematography.
In South America, RPAS usage has grown rapidly, with Argentina, Brazil, and Chile leading in adoption and regulation. However, integrating RPAS into airspace historically restricted to manned aircraft presents challenges in operational safety and air traffic management. Each State has developed their own regulations, making regional harmonization crucial for safer and more efficient RPAS operations.
This presentation explores the experience of South American States in regulating and safely operating RPAS, highlighting best practices, challenges, and future opportunities. It also examines the potential of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, 5G, and blockchain to enhance the safety and efficiency of RPAS operations, paving the way for Urban Air Mobility (UAM).
