Aircraft Operators continue reporting GPS outages likely caused by radio frequency interference. While various efforts are underway to counteract this trend, Thales believes the most suitable backup navigation infrastructure to maintain PBN operations is DME/DME area navigation currently limited to support RNAV5 and RNAV1 applications according to the ICAO PBN Manual.
State of art, re-engineering and enhancement developments provide a suitable path to extend the support to more stringent PBN operations and improve the DME spectrum usage. For a successful and affordable evolution, some constraints need to be fulfilled. These include seamless deployment, backward compatibility with conventional DME and interoperability with TACAN systems. This makes DME the most suitable candidate to take the role of short to long-term Alternative (to GNSS) Position Navigation System.
