At the 235th Session of the ICAO Council, in May 2025, several amendments to the ICAO CORSIA documents were approved. On top of being technical adjustments, these updates are part of a broader effort to maintain the integrity, transparency, and scientific rigor of the CORSIA framework.
This session focuses on CORSIA Sourcing Requirements for Electricity and Waste Gases. This is particularly important for the so-called “e-fuels”, or “Power to liquid fuels”, which rely on the use of electricity and waste gases to produce SAF. These standards ensure that such fuels are developed under a robust sustainability framework.
Dr. Florian Allroggen, Executive Director of the MIT Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment, Senior Strategic Advisor in MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and an expert from the ICAO CAEP Working Group 5 on Aviation Fuels, describes these requirements in detail.
