Episode 23 - Soil Carbon Accumulation and Carbon Capture and Sequestration
50m
At the 235th Session of the ICAO Council, in May 2025, several amendments to the ICAO CORSIA documents were approved. On top of being technical adjustments, these updates are part of a broader effort to maintain the integrity, transparency, and scientific rigor of the CORSIA framework.
This session focuses on the methodologies introduced in the ICAO Document CORSIA Methodology for Calculating Actual Life Cycle Emissions Values to account for (i) GHG emission reductions from Soil Carbon Accumulation (SCA), which allows for the accounting of increased carbon storage in soils resulting from improved feedstock production practices and (ii) geological carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), which provides a framework for accounting for the permanent capture and storage of CO2 associated with fuel production pathways.
ICAO CAEP Working Group 5 experts, Dr. David Chiaramonti, Dr. Kristin Lewis and Dr. Jon Obnamia describe these methodologies.
